Slipping through trees drenched in shadowed talk,
tripping on the feelings of this eerie long walk.
Moonlight trickles through the tops of trees, far above,
while cobwebs drift on memories of all I've ever loved.
Nothing here but midnight sounds and my swishing stride,
until some thing in the bushes crunches off to hide.
Birds leave their nighttime nests, somewhere in the branches,
as moonlight catches feathers, light flickers, dances.
And, somewhere in this nighttime forest, strewn about my mind,
creatures hang in knots of darkness my eyes can't unwind.
I take paths through this wilderness without the light to see,
a way out of this darkness which envelopes me.
Here small things scream and wicked things slowly slouch away,
the screeching of their deaths mirrors night eating day.
Never more can songs be heard, nor pretty pictures seen,
Fear so black eats the light, and drowns the forest green.
Hear darkness grows and black rainbows shift before my eyes,
maons escape my terror and fall on monstrous senses,
and hairs stand up and breathe speeds up as my fear condenses.
I can feel the longboy, pulling in a breathe,
chuffling and ragged as the thoughts of my own death.
I see the endless pie-bald side, like cancer in the night,
and all the running that I do will never make it right.
A great worm is on the move, pushing through the trees,
ignoring my adrenaline and silent, urgent pleas.
At last, I'm caught and swallowed whole into a different plane,
a whole new nightmare dreamscape driving me insane.
